St Barts Hospital 2015-2016

Updated: Apr 3, 2018

This project was part of the largest hospital relocation ever undertaken in Europe and only one of the several projects that Planit has worked on for St Bart's Hospital.

The purpose of the relocation was to create the new Bart's Heart Centre by combining the services and staff from the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green, University College London Hospitals’ The Heart Hospital in Marylebone – along with those already running at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the Bart's Heart Centre is now the largest cardio-vascular surgery centre in the UK, where staff will perform more heart surgery and cardiac procedures than any other centre in Europe, treating approximately 80,000 patients each year.

Planit managed the move of highly specialised medical equipment into new state-of-the-art facilities including 10 theatres, 10 catheter labs, 250 general cardiac wards and 58 critical care units.

A detailed multi-phase logistics plan was created for each department to enable the hospital to remain functional throughout the months of relocation and to disrupt both staff and patients as little as possible.

“Following the hugely successful transition of services, we are delighted to say that the Barts Heart Centre is now open for business, and primed to start delivering innovative and compassionate care to our patients."

Professor Charles Knight- Cardiovascular Clinical Academic Group Executive Director at Barts Health NHS Trust
